In this the first edition of Sunday Jazz Lounge in 2018, Natalia interviews acclaimed pianist, producer, singer and composer Ben Sidran in Madrid during his annual week-long engagement at the Cafe Central. Ben has recorded more than thirty solo albums, including the Grammy-nominated Concert for García Lorca, and produced recordings for such noted artists as Van Morrison, Diana Ross, Michael Franks, Rickie Lee Jones, Mose Allison and Steve Miller (with whom he co-wrote the hit song “Space Cowboy”). He is a film composer (Hoop Dreams, amongst others) and has authored two excellent books on the subject of jazz: Black Talk, a cultural history of the music, and Talking Jazz, a series of conversations with inspirational musicians. He continues to record, write, produce and tour the world. We will hear Ben’s thoughts on press and television, find out why the most revolutionary thing in the world is feeling good, his experiences at University in Brighton in the 1960s, his secrets as an interviewer, how working with musicians around the world has impacted his sound…and many other wonderful visionary nuggets of wisdom and humour. Accompanying him is his son Leo Sidran, a very successful drummer, singer, songwriter, composer and producer. Join us for champagne and jazz talk in a Madrid hotel room!
You will also hear a selection of fantastic tracks, in this edition focused around jazz pianists, including Ray Charles, Thelonious Monk, Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck, Nat Cole, Martial Solal, Jutta Hipp and many other stars of the jazz firmament. Last but not least, in this show we will remember the extraordinary British pianist John "Critch" Critchinson, who left us recently... a great loss for British jazz.
